چکیده

Halictus ligatus Say and its cryptic sibling species H. poeyi Lepeletier were sampled from an area of sympatry and typed for mitochondrial DNA sequence differentiation, as was 1 individual of each species from allopatric populations. Two other species, H. rubicundus (Christ) and H. farinosus Smith, were included to root the tree. Phylogenetic analysis of the aligned sequences showed that H. ligatus and H. poeyi are sister species and differ from each other at 33 of the 797 aligned nucleotide positions. Sequence divergence within species was <0.6%, whereas that between species exceeded 4%. These data support an earlier report that H. ligatus and H. poeyi represent distinct species (based on nuclear allozyme markers) and are sufficient to cast doubt on a recent glaciationinduced speciation event as the cause of the differentiation of these 2 taxa.

A novel social polymorphism in a primitively eusocial bee.

Halictine sweat bees (Hymenoptera, Halictidae) are model organisms for the evolution of altruism, reproductive castes, and eusocial colony organization. Halictine social behavior is not only extremely variable, but also ecologically and evolutionarily labile. Among social species, colony social organization ranges from communal societies of egalitarian females to eusocial and semisocial ones wi...

DNA barcoding and male genital morphology reveal five new cryptic species in the West Palearctic bee Seladonia smaragdula (Vachal, 1895) (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Halictidae).

Several forms or variants have long been recognized in the West Palearctic sweat bee Seladonia smaragdula (Vachal, 1895). Using DNA barcoding and morphological characters, primarily of the male genitalia, these variants are here recognized and described as five new species: S. gemmella Pauly sp. nov., S. submediterranea Pauly sp. nov., S. orientana Pauly & Devalez sp. nov., S. phryganica Pauly ...

Phylogeny of the bee genus Halictus (Hymenoptera: halictidae) based on parsimony and likelihood analyses of nuclear EF-1alpha sequence data.

We investigated higher-level phylogenetic relationships within the genus Halictus based on parsimony and maximum likelihood (ML) analysis of elongation factor-1alpha DNA sequence data. Our data set includes 41 OTUs representing 35 species of halictine bees from a diverse sample of outgroup genera and from the three widely recognized subgenera of Halictus (Halictus s.s., Seladonia, and Vestitoha...

Re-identification of an exotic bee introduced to the hunter valley region, New South Wales -Seladonia hotoni (Vachal, 1903) (Hymenoptera: Halictidae)

In 2004 and 2006, well-established populations of an exotic halictine bee were found in the Upper Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. On the basis of morphology, the species was identified as Halictus (Seladonia) smaragdulus Vachal, 1895 by an expert familiar with that genus. Subsequently, it was discovered that there are six species in the S. smaragdula complex, but none of the...

The bee family Halictidae (Hymenoptera, Apoidea) from Central Asia collected by the Kyushu and Shimane Universities Expeditions

Background Central Asia is one of the important centers of bee diversity in the Palearctic Region. However, there is insufficient information for many taxa in the central Asian bee fauna. The Kyushu and Shimane Universities (Japan) Expeditions to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Xinjiang Uyghur of China were conducted in the years 2000 to 2004 and 2012 to 2014. New information Eighty-e...
